Coaching is centred around helping you discover solutions and answers that are already within you.
Academic or learning coaching is no different - while I am able to show you certain techniques and strategies, they will only work if they are the right ones for you. Quite often we know instinctively which approach feels right but don’t follow those instincts because we have been told by others to do things a certain way.
In our coaching sessions we will explore your unique strengths and preferences, your goals and motivation, and by doing so lay the foundations for using the right techniques and strategies with confidence.
5 steps to learning with confidence
Find out your unique strengths and preferences and discover how they can help or hinder your learning journey
Discover what motivates you to learn and set yourself goals that matter to you (not your teachers or parents!) and help you stay on track
What are your blockers? And how can you remove them?
Learn how to organise your learning so that it works for your brain, not anyone else's
Use proven study skills, strategies and techniques
When revising for GCSEs, many students find themselves struggling with the sheer amount they have to revise without ever having been shown how best to go about it. No wonder they feel overwhelmed.
Sessions will focus on how to structure a revision plan, how to prioritise when there’s simply too much, and how to organise individual revision sessions.
Best results can be achieved either at the start of year 10 or 11 when it’s easy to set up a routine that will make final revision a breeze.
Starting with learning coaching in Year 7 or 8 can be really helpful in establishing good homework and revision habits that will make GCSE revision a lot easier later on.
Sessions will focus on motivation and goal setting, building in homework and revision sessions so they're not always last minute, and exploring different strategies and techniques in slow time without the rush of exam pressures.
Studying for A-levels, a degree or a professional qualification at any point in your life can present similar challenges as those that come with revising for GCSEs. Revising a vast amount of information or organising study alongside work can feel overwhelming, especially when we haven't done it for a while.
Sessions will focus on your specific challenges; potential areas of support include procrastination and motivation, organisation, memory techniques, note-taking techniques, and exam anxiety, amongst others.
Thankfully, here in the UK primary school children are not being asked to do regular homework or study for regular tests, and learning in school is varied and age appropriate. The only thing they are asked to practise at home is reading and spelling.
Learning coaching as such is therefore not really appropriate. However, if reading or spelling practice is stressful in your home, you may benefit from my parent support offer.
Generally, the sessions are a space for you to explore what is most important to you. You may struggle with a particular aspect of learning or revising (then we focus on that), or perhaps you don’t know where to start at all (then we take a more structured approach around the five steps listed above).
The first session will be dedicated to getting to know each other and setting goals for the coaching. Sessions 2 to 5 will be split into two parts: in the first part we can look at a specific issue that might have cropped up or work on some of the softer aspects of learning, and in the second part I will show you new learning techniques. The last session will focus on consolidation and next steps.
Sometimes there may be a bit of ‘homework’ for you to complete between sessions to test out new approaches or strategies. It is important that you commit to completing these little tasks for the sessions to be effective.
Typically 5-6 sessions are sufficient to make some progress and give you enough strategies and approaches to transform your studying.
That depends on the issue you are trying to tackle, how quickly you want to address it, and how much time you can invest between sessions. Sessions can be weekly, fortnightly, or on demand.
In-person sessions can be offered in Southampton (+10 miles), otherwise sessions take place online over Google Meet.
