Learn how to learn

Holistic Academic Coaching
Take the stress out of learning and learn with more confidence and self-motivation, retaining school material more quickly and effectively.
I show adults and children how to make school and learning less stressful.
I am a mum of two daughters and live in Southampton in the UK. My background is in PR and communications and after many years in the public sector I still work freelance with a number of clients in this field.
But I have always been involved with children and young people in one way or another. In 2016/17 I taught at Southampton’s German Saturday School, and in 2022 I started to volunteer for Yes Futures, a charity that provides coaching programmes at schools for children that need a little extra support to discover and achieve their full potential. In 2023 I qualified as a certified Learning Coach and have since been supporting teenagers on their revision journeys.
Having children myself, I see first hand the pressures they are put under - by a school system that requires them to conform and perform, regardless of their unique learning styles, interests or preferences.
With my work I want to help children (and adults!) to take the pressure off. To discover and build on their own existing resources and strengths, discover their unique way of learning, learn how to apply techniques and strategies that work for them, and ultimately regain confidence in their abilities.
In short, as an academic or learning coach I support people in learning how to learn.
While tutors work subject-specific and teach what to learn, coaching is independent of subjects and focused on learning and study skills - including memory and study techniques, organisation and planning, motivation and goal setting. Through the lens of learning, we also explore a student’s self-awareness, confidence, and communication skills.
The aim is for the students to be able to discover and build on their own existing resources, and to apply the learned techniques independently. Therefore typically around six sessions are enough to achieve progress, while traditional tutoring usually takes place over a year.
“On a positive note, she has attended all her mocks and has been buoyant throughout. She also had one of her teachers remark that she had done well in her biology exam. This is quite different to the previous mocks run - a major improvement!”
